Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era 1.0 release: Apr 2027Not announced: our best guess from Unfrozen's plan to stay in Early Access for about a year.
Best guessUnfrozen's Early Access answers on Steam say it plans "to remain in Early Access for a year" from Apr 30, 2026, and its May 28, 2026 roadmap puts 1.0 after Stage 2 (Q4 2026) and a Stage 3 with no date. Stage 1 shipped on time on Sep 30, 2026, so we count to the first anniversary of Early Access, at the hour Unfrozen announced the Early Access release (13:00 UTC). Steam

Why an SSD

Unfrozen designed Olden Era to run "with lower system requirements than the current Steam median" and calls performance its "top priority" (Devlog #15, Apr 24, 2026). A 160 by 160 Jebus Cross map can hold "tens of thousands of animated and effect-laden objects", so the game loads assets ahead into RAM and video memory. That is why Unfrozen "strongly recommend[s] using an SSD", especially for load times: the aim is that the only loading screen you see is when you start or continue a game, never when you enter a town or a battle. On the store page the SSD is listed as required.

Laptops, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck

Any Windows laptop that meets the minimum should run it; Steam lists no separate laptop specification, and the listed cards are desktop models, so compare a laptop's graphics chip with them. Olden Era has no macOS or Linux build on Steam (Steam), and Unfrozen has announced none.

On Steam Deck, Valve's compatibility check rates it "Playable", with three notes: the default controller layout is not fully functional, the on-screen button glyphs do not match the Deck's controls, and text input does not open the on-screen keyboard (Steam, read Oct 21, 2026). Unfrozen temporarily turned off gamepad detection in Patch #1 on May 1, 2026 and added an experimental option for other input devices in Patch #3 two days later. The game is also on the Microsoft Store as a Game Preview and in PC Game Pass, as a PC game (Price and Editions).

Languages

Steam lists 16 languages: English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Czech, Hungarian, Japanese, Turkish, Ukrainian, Italian and Portuguese (Brazil). Only English has full audio; the others are text (Steam). Czech and Hungarian were added before launch, bringing the count to 11 in Mar 2025.

Settings for readability

After the demo, players said they struggled to tell which objects they could interact with, so Unfrozen added readability settings before Early Access (Community Feedback #4, Mar 6, 2026):

  • Background desaturation at 0%, 50% or 100%, which grays out the scenery behind objects.
  • A highlight of the tiles from which an object can be reached, shown on hover.
  • Custom highlight colors for interactable objects, allied and enemy heroes, visited objects and neutral creatures on the adventure map.
  • A combat camera position you can switch at any time; since Patch #7 (May 21, 2026) there is an alternative starting camera, and since the Roadmap Patch the chosen one is kept between battles.
  • Rebindable hotkeys, with new ones added. Shift+U hides the interface (Patch #13).

Steam also lists color alternatives, contrast controls, adjustable difficulty, a mouse-only option, save anytime and play without timed input among the game's accessibility features (Steam).
