Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era 1.0 release: Apr 2027Not announced: our best guess from Unfrozen's plan to stay in Early Access for about a year.
Best guessUnfrozen's Early Access answers on Steam say it plans "to remain in Early Access for a year" from Apr 30, 2026, and its May 28, 2026 roadmap puts 1.0 after Stage 2 (Q4 2026) and a Stage 3 with no date. Stage 1 shipped on time on Sep 30, 2026, so we count to the first anniversary of Early Access, at the hour Unfrozen announced the Early Access release (13:00 UTC). Steam

Hive

The Hive is Olden Era's villain faction, a demon-worshipping cult of insects built as a "monofaction" that grows stronger the more Hive creature types it fields, with the faction skill Summon Swarm that hatches exploding Fire Larvae and a T7 Hive Queen.

The Hive is the villain faction of Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era: a cult of demon-worshipping insects on the continent of Jadame, designed by Unfrozen as a "monofaction" whose creatures grow stronger the more different Hive units march together (Devlog #7). Its faction skill, Summon Swarm, hatches Fire Larvae in battle that block paths and explode, its creatures devour corpses and punish targets of a different tier, and its laws reward aggressive expansion. It is one of the three new factions among the six playable since Early Access began on Apr 30, 2026 (Unfrozen), alongside Grove and Schism.

Lore

Olden Era is set centuries before the demon invasion of Heroes 3, so Unfrozen could not bring back the Inferno town. Instead it built a new villain from the "primitive, half-sentient tribes of wasps" of the role-playing game Might and Magic 8, asking why they were barely a nascent people (Devlog #7). The answer is a cult: "the Hive isn't just a faction full of bugs", Unfrozen wrote, but a cult of a demonic master "whose essence courses through every insect and every follower", compared to the Cult of Baa of earlier games and mixing "occultism, body horror, and heavy lore references". Unfrozen's own game page calls them "a swarm of insectoids led by an Inferno demon lord" (Unfrozen); the master is not named.

Devlog #7 ends with an inquisitor's diary from the Suncrown Expedition, found in the study of the minotaur scholar Kelarr. It tracks insects building a nest near the ruined village of Castellatus and Chimera Falls, commanded by a dark-skinned elf with "fleshy, hair-like growths" who says she "will enact the devil's will", and ends with the inquisitor himself converted to the swarm (Devlog #7). In the campaign the other factions of Jadame must unite against the Hive (Unfrozen).

The town

The Hive town is a nest of dark organic spires and egg-like domes over rivers of lava. Its creature dwellings, as the patch notes name them, are Neglected Housing (tier 1), Carrion Lair (tier 2), Paper Nest (tier 3), Chitinous Ziggurat (tier 4), Apex (tier 5), Burning Soul Burrows (tier 6) and Tower of Love (tier 7) (Patch #9, Patch #13). Building costs have moved in almost every balance patch: Patch #3 raised the Chitinous Ziggurat from 2,250 to 3,750 gold days after launch, and Patch #9 made the low dwellings dearer and the Tower of Love 2,500 gold cheaper. In the Oct 15, 2026 beta the Paper Nest needs both the Neglected Housing and the Carrion Lair first (beta notes).

The creator Turin's tour of the town in his Hive Beginners Guide (Apr 19, 2026) shows its special buildings: Beelzebub's Hand gives Attack to any visiting hero, and a ritual building can return a hero to level 1 once, in exchange for permanent attribute bonuses that depend on the hero's level at the time, which he expects to matter only in very long games.

Creatures

Each tier has a base creature and two alternative upgrades, as the Oct 15, 2026 patch notes list them (beta notes). The Fire Larva is not hired: Summon Swarm creates it in battle. See Creatures for every faction.

Tier Base unit Its two upgrades Known for
Summon Fire Larva none Hatches from cocoons, explodes on death
1 Parasite Warden Parasite, Ravager Parasite Fast; Ravager's "Topple the Strong!" hits higher tiers harder
2 Locust Harvester Locust, Overgrown Locust Jumps to a corpse and devours it for buffs (Steam)
3 Hornet Chanter, Stinger The hornets of the faction reveal
4 Scorpion Volcanic Scorpion, Spelaean Scorpion "Adaptation" abilities; support or fighter in the beta
5 Reaver Menacing Reaver, Maniacal Reaver Menacing Reaver trades "Rapid Assault" for "Swift Strike" in the beta
6 Waurms Devourer, Pyroboros "Corpse Eater" heals by eating corpses
7 Hive Queen Hive Mother, Hive Huntress Bonus against Temple and Necropolis armies; Huntress's "Squash the Weak!"

The roster changed before launch. The faction reveal video of Feb 14, 2025 still shows the tier 1 cards as Gnat, Warden Gnat and Ravager Gnat, and the tier 4 line as Mantis, Vermilion Mantis and Royal Mantis. The Hive units were retextured with a more insect-like color scheme, and the Gnats and Mantes of the early showings were replaced by Parasites and Scorpions (Devlog #15). The tier 6 worm is "Waurms" in the unit lists and "Waurmos" in Devlog #7 and the law names.

The reveal's tier 7 cards show the Hive Queen's passive "Soul Assimilator": at the beginning of a battle she gains different bonuses for each faction present in the enemy's army. Her "Blasphemous Adoration" doubles those effects until the end of the next round, and the Hive Huntress's version quadruples them. The Hive Queen and her upgrades gain Attack and Defense when the enemy army holds Temple or Necropolis creatures, a bonus the beta cuts from 25% to 20% (beta notes).

Faction skill: Summon Swarm

Every Hive hero starts with Summon Swarm. Devlog #7 described it before launch: the hero summons larva cocoons whose health is based on the total health of the Hive army, the cocoons block paths like obstacles, and they hatch into temporary larvae that fight (Devlog #7). Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026) reworked it because in the late game it created "a massive extra unit that is extremely difficult to counter": other summoned or temporary stacks no longer count toward the larvae, larva health went from 8 to 16, and the explosion effects grew (Unstable Concoction from 8 to 15 damage per hero level, Fiery Embrace and Blow Up from 16 to 30), shifting the focus to explosions.

Turin's demonstration (Apr 19, 2026, before that rework) shows the cocoon at work: it hatches a stack of 32 Fire Larvae, which can self-destruct, or jump onto an enemy and blow up for a Focus Charge, dealing damage to every stack around them.

The Oct 15, 2026 beta gives the Fire Larva 20 health and a passive, "Castes": with a Might hero larvae deal 50% more damage, with a Magic hero their explosions do. The subskill Hive Power now makes the "Premature Emergence" ability cheaper and faster to reuse (beta notes). Beta changes are on the public beta branch only, with a release date to be announced; see Balance Update Beta.

The rest of the faction's identity is in its creatures. Some abilities scale with the tier difference to the target, the Locusts and Waurms devour corpses to heal and grow stronger, "a skill your heroes can also learn", and the monofaction design rewards an army made mostly of Hive units (Devlog #7).

Faction Laws

Unfrozen describes the Hive's Faction Laws as "tailored for aggressive expansion": they can let you hire upgraded units directly from dwellings, give huge bonuses in areas you do not control, and show your Hive heroes far more about enemy heroes and towns (Devlog #14). Laws named in the patch notes include Hidden Desires, Focus Reserves, Natural Selection, "Evolve, Adapt, Overcome", "Prosper and Flourish" (Patch #9), Hive Offsprings I to III, which power up the larvae (Patch #11), Mana Devour, Hive Magic and Great Conquest (Patch #13), Hive Integration and Hive Reception, and an Elite law for each creature line (beta notes).

Heroes

The Hive has 18 playable heroes, like every faction (FAQ Part 2). Those named in the patch notes are Pauper, Maelstrom, Nor, Zoran the Self-Founded, Lo, Leira, Oriax and Tavi (Patch #9), Mila, Goldentongue, Niev and Khariset (Patch #8). Tavi specializes in the larvae: he summons more Fire Larvae based on the Hive army's health, and since Patch #8 he is a Magic hero while Pauper became a Might hero. See Heroes and Best Heroes.

The faction reveal of Feb 14, 2025 introduced eight of them on hero cards: Tavi, Maelstrom, Curson, Duke of Rage and Zoran the Self-Founded as Enforcers, and Khariseth (Khariset in the patch notes), Xirr, Groo and Leira as Heralds.

Changes since the reveal and in patches

  • Before launch: Gnats and Mantes replaced by Parasites and Scorpions; units recolored (Devlog #15, Apr 24, 2026).
  • Patch #9, Jun 2, 2026: the Hive "performs well in Arena and Classic modes but struggles in Single Hero mode", so Unfrozen brought forward buffs: weekly growth up (tier 1 from 21 to 22, tier 2 from 13 to 14), more damage on tiers 1 to 3, Corpse Eater healing from 65 to 120, new starting skills for seven heroes and cheaper laws (Patch #9).
  • Patch #11, Jul 6, 2026: larvae reworked toward explosions and Hive Offsprings I's explosion bonus cut from 100% to 50% (Patch #11).
  • Patch #13, Aug 20, 2026: Parasites lost 1 Speed and Waurms 1 Initiative because Waurms "became overly dominant", while Scorpions gained Initiative; Mana Devour, Hive Magic and Great Conquest now affect only Hive heroes and creatures (Patch #13).
  • Beta, Oct 15, 2026: to keep an "aggressive and risky playstyle" while cutting losses and randomness, Unfrozen reworked every upgrade, split the Scorpions into a support and a fighter, gave the Pyroboros "Mana Eater", limited the larva taunt from Hive Offsprings II to the first round after hatching, and added the First Aid skill for all factions to answer the Hive's "bleeding" (beta notes, Patch #14).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hive in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era? The Hive is Olden Era's villain faction, a cult of demon-worshipping insects built from the wasp tribes of Might and Magic 8. It plays as a "monofaction" whose units grow stronger together, with the faction skill Summon Swarm.

What is the Hive's faction skill in Olden Era? It is Summon Swarm, which creates cocoons that block paths and hatch into Fire Larvae. Since Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026) the larvae are built around exploding.

Who leads the Hive in Olden Era? Unfrozen has not named the Hive's demonic master; its game page calls it an Inferno demon lord. A dark-skinned elf commanding the insects appears in Devlog #7, also unnamed.

What happened to the Gnats and Mantes in Olden Era? They were replaced by Parasites and Scorpions before Early Access, as Devlog #15 (Apr 24, 2026) showed. The tier 1 and tier 4 Hive units are now Parasites and Scorpions.

Is the Hive strong in Olden Era? Unfrozen said in June 2026 that the Hive did well in Arena and Classic but struggled in Single Hero, then buffed it in Patch #9 and trimmed it in Patches #11 and #13. See Best Faction for how the factions compare.

What are the Hive's Faction Laws in Olden Era? They favor aggressive expansion: hiring upgraded units straight from dwellings, bonuses in territory you do not control, and extra intelligence on enemy heroes and towns. Others power up the larvae (Hive Offsprings) and each creature line.
