Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era 1.0 release: Apr 2027Not announced: our best guess from Unfrozen's plan to stay in Early Access for about a year.
Best guessUnfrozen's Early Access answers on Steam say it plans "to remain in Early Access for a year" from Apr 30, 2026, and its May 28, 2026 roadmap puts 1.0 after Stage 2 (Q4 2026) and a Stage 3 with no date. Stage 1 shipped on time on Sep 30, 2026, so we count to the first anniversary of Early Access, at the hour Unfrozen announced the Early Access release (13:00 UTC). Steam

Game Modes

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has three skirmish modes, Classic (several heroes, the series' standard), Single Hero (one hero whose death loses the game) and Arena (a draft into one battle), each playable against the AI, in hotseat or online with ranked matchmaking, plus the campaign's first act, scenarios, puzzle challenges and, since Sep 30, 2026, Alliances for team play.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has three skirmish modes: Classic, in which you hire several heroes, explore, build and conquer as in every Heroes game; Single Hero, in which you have one hero and lose when it dies; and Arena, a draft of a hero, skills, artifacts, spells and army that ends in a single battle. All three are playable alone against the AI and online, with "matchmaking, ranked play, and leaderboards for all three modes" since the Early Access launch on Apr 30, 2026 (Unfrozen). Around them sit the Campaign (Act 1), premade scenarios such as The Mysterious Island, "a series of puzzle-style challenges", hotseat on one PC and a pre-release Map Editor. Hooded Horse's launch trailer shows the game-mode cards, then an Arena draft of artifacts, spells and creatures, then the faction and hero pickers.

Classic

Classic is "the basic way to play the game: hire heroes, explore the map, build your kingdom, conquer towns, defeat the opponent by extinguishing all their heroes and towns", in the words of Unfrozen's Devlog #2 (Sep 27, 2024). It is the mode a Heroes of Might and Magic 3 player knows, and it keeps the habits competitive players built over the years: a "main" hero who fights while "couriers" carry troops and resources, and hero chains that pass an army from hero to hero across the map. Movement points still depend on the speed of the slowest units in the army, as in Heroes 3. For players who find chaining tedious, Unfrozen added the Remote Foothold, a building that stores an army and artifacts for collection at any other Foothold, and the "Assemble!" spell, which lets a hero trade with a distant hero as if they stood side by side. Templates can leave Footholds out for "the super-classic experience".

Classic games are played on Random Map Generator templates or on handmade maps, against the AI or people. The online ranked pool is a rotation of templates: after Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026) it was Jebus Cross, Universe, Infinity, Last Fortress, Jebus Tournament and Arcade, with Jebus Cross and Jebus Tournament always included. Unfrozen's devlog notes that a match on Jebus Cross, the most popular competitive template, "takes no more than a couple of in-game weeks", while huge maps for slow exploration are supported too.

Single Hero

Single Hero gives each player one hero, "and their death means defeat, which ends the game" (Devlog #2). It began as a kind of community template and became a full mode with its own ladder. Because one hero explores more slowly, games take more in-game days, and its templates differ: some have more creature dwellings, and adventure spells for fast movement are easier to get, sometimes from the start. Unfrozen called it "particularly suitable for first-timers as it is easier to manage a single hero."

The mode has rules of its own. Since Patch #11 the retreat button is disabled in Single Hero, and its templates include tournament battles in which you must fight with your starting hero; if the hero is dead when the battle triggers, you lose. The ranked rotation after Patch #11 was Helltide, Sprint, Exodus, Blitz, Outcast Tournament and Vendetta. On the live version Single Hero needs 20% fewer Astrology Points and Law points for each new level; the public beta of Oct 21, 2026 removes that discount, so map spells and Faction Laws unlock "slightly slower" there (Unfrozen). That change is on the beta branch only, with its release date to be announced.

Faction balance differs by mode, and Unfrozen tunes for it: in Patch #9 (Jun 2, 2026) it reverted part of a Schism change because it hit Single Hero too hard and buffed the Hive, which did well in Arena and Classic but struggled in Single Hero.

Arena

Arena drops the adventure map: "No traditional map exploration, no castle building, no resource gathering. Just. pure. battle." (Devlog #5, Nov 22, 2024). Each player picks one of three heroes, then skills, artifacts, spells and an army, and the two builds fight one battle. The draft takes about five minutes and a whole match "like 10-15 minutes" (Unfrozen, Aug 29, 2024). Its ancestor is Heroes 5's Hot Seat Duel Mode, which offered 18 preset heroes. Patch #13 (Aug 20, 2026) overhauled it with hero starting bonuses and rerolls; the Arena page has the full rules.

Single-player content

  • Campaign: one campaign that tells every faction's story, "non-linear with player choices" (Devlog #1). Early Access has Act 1; Acts 2 and 3 come with the full release.
  • Scenarios: premade maps "with self-contained stories". Unfrozen has added The Mysterious Island (Patch #13, Aug 20, 2026), a huge PvE map by the Heroes 3 mapmaker Papyjama, then the scenario "Prisoners" and the custom map "Broken Alliance" (Patch #14, Sep 3, 2026).
  • Challenges: "a series of puzzle-style challenges" listed among the launch content (Unfrozen).
  • Random maps: Quick Start on a template, or since Sep 30, 2026 the Advanced Random Map Generator, which builds a fully random map from your settings (multi-hero or single hero, size, players, alliances, richness, difficulty, symmetry and win conditions) (Unfrozen).
  • Tutorial: an in-game tutorial is part of the launch content.

Unfrozen's Early Access overview of May 1, 2026 recommends the tutorial to new players, offers the challenges as "advanced puzzles" in a tab of their own, and describes the scenarios as handcrafted maps "built around a specific tale or theme".

Multiplayer, hotseat and Alliances

Online play has lobbies and ranked matchmaking, which Unfrozen called a first "in the series' history", with "matchmaking, ranked play, and leaderboards for all three modes" (Devlog #1); each mode has its own rating. Games use a chess-style timer set in the lobby, with simultaneous turns until players can meet (FAQ: Part 2). Hotseat lets several people take turns on one PC. The Alliances update of Sep 30, 2026 added co-op against the AI and team games such as 2v2, with shared fog of war, resource trading and five Alliance templates (Unfrozen). See Multiplayer.

In Unfrozen's video on the update, allies play every turn at the same time for the whole match, can request resources from each other, "a feature not present in the series before", exchange armies and artifacts, and both win when one of them meets the map's win conditions.

What comes next

The roadmap of May 28, 2026 lists Observer Mode and Replays for Q4 2026, an Ironman mode for the campaign and new PvP win conditions for the rest of Early Access, and campaign Acts 2 and 3, a PvE Roguelike mode and map sharing for 1.0. None of them had shipped as of Oct 21, 2026, and 1.0 has no date.

Frequently asked questions

What game modes does Olden Era have? Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has three skirmish modes, Classic, Single Hero and Arena, each playable against the AI, in hotseat or online with ranked matchmaking. It also has the campaign's first act, premade scenarios, puzzle challenges and, since Sep 30, 2026, Alliances for co-op and team games.

What is Single Hero mode in Olden Era? Each player has only one hero, and losing that hero loses the game. Olden Era's Single Hero templates give more creature dwellings and easier adventure spells, and the mode has its own ranked ladder.

What is the difference between Classic and Single Hero? In Classic you hire many heroes, use couriers and chains, and win by taking every enemy town and hero. In Single Hero you manage one hero, the game takes more in-game days, and the hero's death ends it.

Which Olden Era mode is best for beginners? Unfrozen calls Single Hero "particularly suitable for first-timers", and Arena a "good starting point" for players new to the series because a match is short. The tutorial and campaign Act 1 teach the basics first.

Does Olden Era have co-op? Yes, since the Alliances update of Sep 30, 2026: friends can team up against the AI or play team against team, with shared vision and resource trading.

Can you play Olden Era offline? Yes. The campaign, scenarios, challenges and skirmishes against the AI are single-player, and hotseat lets several people share one PC; ranked matchmaking and online lobbies need a connection.
