Map Editor
Olden Era has shipped a pre-release map editor since its Early Access launch on Apr 30, 2026. Unfrozen plans editor improvements in Stage 3 of its roadmap and map sharing for 1.0; as of Oct 21, 2026 there is no official way to share maps and no Steam Workshop.
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era has a map editor: "a pre-release version of map editor to create your own adventures" has been part of the game since Early Access began on Apr 30, 2026 (Unfrozen). It is unfinished by Unfrozen's own description. Its Early Access Roadmap of May 28, 2026 promises that the editor "will become much more user-friendly, stable and clear" in Stage 3, the last stretch of Early Access, and lists "Map Sharing support" for Stage 4, the 1.0 release (Unfrozen). As of Oct 21, 2026 neither has arrived: there is no official way to share maps, and the Steam store page lists no Steam Workshop support (Steam).

What was promised
The editor was part of Olden Era from its reveal. Unfrozen's announcement of Aug 22, 2024 named "creative tools that will allow players to create their own Heroes of Might & Magic single maps and multiplayer templates" among the main features coming during Early Access (Unfrozen). Its first FAQ, on Aug 30, 2024, promised "an intuitive in-game map editor during Early Access" for single and multiplayer maps that players could "share with other players" (Unfrozen).
Devlog #1 on Sep 13, 2024 split this into two tools: a Map Editor that is "very approachable" and a Template Editor that is "rather advanced", for players who want a biome gone or a template of their own, and promised "an easy way to find player-made maps and share your creations" (Unfrozen). Devlog #6 in December 2024 said the editor would let players "create and save your own custom maps", promised a separate devlog on it, and aimed to ship it in Early Access with the first campaign missions (Unfrozen).
What shipped
Early Access arrived with the map editor in its "pre-release" form (Unfrozen). The patch notes since mention it three times:
- Patch #5 (May 8, 2026): the customizable University object ("custom_university") no longer crashes the game when a map is loaded (Unfrozen).
- Patch #13 (Aug 20, 2026): incorrect side assignments in the Map Editor were fixed, and so was a bug that stopped players from recruiting units on player-created maps with free Diplomacy, because their price was 0 gold (Unfrozen).
No Template Editor has been released, and no announcement describes one in the game as of Oct 21, 2026. Players who want a map shaped to their taste can use the fully random Random Map Generator added on Sep 30, 2026, which takes size, players, richness, difficulty, symmetry and win conditions as settings.
What is planned
The roadmap of May 28, 2026 gives the editor two steps (Unfrozen):
- Stage 3, "the road to patch 1.0", which "includes all the time left in Early Access": "Map editor improvements: Map editor will become much more user-friendly, stable and clear."
- Stage 4, 1.0: "Map Sharing support."
The Steam store's Early Access section also promises "improvements to the map editor" by the full version, and the store description invites players onto "handcrafted maps built by the developers or community members on the in-game map editor" (Steam). Neither stage has a date: Stage 3 follows Stage 2, planned for Q4 2026, and Unfrozen has not announced when 1.0 will be. Further out, Devlog #15 said the game is built "with high modability in mind" and that, once it is fully released, Unfrozen intends to let players "swap or adjust visuals or create new content of your own" (Unfrozen).
The maps Unfrozen adds itself are made by its level designer Papyjama, whose The Mysterious Island began as a fan map for Heroes of Might and Magic 3.
