Hive Guide
The Hive wins in Olden Era by aggression: an army made mostly of Hive creatures, Fire Larvae from Summon Swarm to soak and explode, and laws for fast expansion, while keeping its own losses down, its main weakness. Built from Unfrozen's patch notes as of Oct 21, 2026.
The Hive wins in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era by aggression: an army made mostly of Hive creatures, Fire Larvae from the faction skill Summon Swarm to block, soak and explode, and laws "tailored for aggressive expansion" (Devlog #14). Its problem is its own losses: Unfrozen calls its battles "demanding", needing "significant time investment to minimize losses" (Patch #9), and its latest balance work aims to keep "an aggressive and risky playstyle" while cutting those losses (beta notes). This guide follows Unfrozen's notes up to the Oct 21, 2026 beta. For the faction itself see Hive; for the basics, the Beginner's Guide.
Quick facts
| Plan in one line | Keep the army all-Hive, let larvae take the hits, expand fast, avoid losses |
| Faction skill | Summon Swarm: cocoons that hatch Fire Larvae (Devlog #7) |
| Strong in (Unfrozen, Jun 2, 2026) | Arena and Classic; weaker in Single Hero (Patch #9) |
| Larva specialist | Tavi (Magic hero since Patch #8) |
| Live version | v0.81.04; the Oct 15, 2026 balance update is on the public beta only |
Strengths and weaknesses
The Hive is built as a "monofaction": the more different Hive unit types march together, the stronger they are, so mixing in other factions' creatures works against it (Devlog #7). Its creatures adapt to the target: some abilities scale with the tier difference (the Ravager Parasite's "Topple the Strong!" against bigger enemies, the Hive Huntress's "Squash the Weak!" against smaller ones), and the Locusts and Waurms devour corpses to heal and grow. Unfrozen's reading of its statistics in June 2026 was that the Hive "performs well in Arena and Classic modes but struggles in Single Hero mode" (Patch #9).
Turin, a strategy creator who streams the game, calls the Hive "probably one of the hardest factions in the game to play" in his Hive Beginners Guide of Apr 19, 2026, recorded before the Early Access launch. His reason: it has no effective ranged unit early on to clear the map's guarded stacks, so it relies on careful positioning of its melee units, good timing and Summon Swarm's cocoon to bait the AI's attacks. He also calls it "very rewarding": late in the game its fast melee swarms, with mass Haste and Tactics, can strike first.
Its weakness is attrition. Unfrozen planned a new skill for "Hive's and Dungeon's bleeding problems" (Patch #14), which arrived in the beta as First Aid (see below), and it trimmed the larva taunt that had covered for missing ranged units because "the effect itself proved incredibly powerful" (beta notes).
Summon Swarm and the larvae
Summon Swarm summons larva cocoons whose health comes from the total health of the Hive army; the cocoons block paths and hatch into temporary larvae (Devlog #7). Since Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026) other summoned or temporary stacks no longer count toward the larvae, and their power is in explosions: larva health 16, Unstable Concoction 15 damage per hero level, Fiery Embrace and Blow Up 30 per hero level. Unfrozen's notes give the uses: the cocoons block paths, and the larva Taunt from the Hive Offsprings II law was added "to help minimize casualties in battles where no ranged units were available" (beta notes).
Turin's advice for the cocoon is about timing: drop it at the end of a round, after the enemy has acted, so it is sure to hatch, or drop it in front of the enemy, because the AI will attack it instead of advancing on your army. In his demonstration 32 Fire Larvae hatched and then blew up among the enemy stacks. His video predates Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026), which rebuilt the larvae around their explosions and stopped other summons from counting toward them.
On the Oct 15, 2026 beta the Fire Larva has 20 health and the passive "Castes": with a Might hero larvae deal 50% more damage, with a Magic hero their explosions do 50% more, so the hero's class decides whether larvae fight or blow up. The Hive Power subskill now cuts the cost and cooldown of the "Premature Emergence" ability by 1 and sits at subskill tier 2, with Ravage at tier 3 (beta notes).
First week and the town
The Hive's low dwellings are dear. Patch #9 made Neglected Housing I (tier 1) 500 gold and Neglected Housing II 1,250 gold dearer, and Carrion Lair II (tier 2) 1,750 gold dearer, in exchange for more weekly growth (tier 1 from 21 to 22, tier 2 from 13 to 14). The top dwelling went the other way: the Tower of Love (tier 7) became 2,500 gold cheaper, and Patch #13 cut Tower of Love II by another 2,500 gold and 5 Crystals for 10 more Wood and Ore and made the Apex (tier 5) 500 gold cheaper. Since Patch #11 the Burning Soul Burrows (tier 6) need the Paper Nest I (tier 3) rather than the Chitinous Ziggurat (tier 4), so the Waurms can come before the Scorpions. In the beta the Paper Nest needs both lower dwellings first.
Which upgrades
Each tier has a base unit and two alternative upgrades. What the official notes say each line is for:
| Tier | Line | What the notes say |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Parasite, Warden, Ravager | Highly mobile, dealing damage without taking counterattacks, so slowed in Patch #13; Ravager hits higher tiers harder (+6% per tier in the beta); Warden gains "Strike and Return" in the beta |
| 2 | Locust, Harvester, Overgrown | Jump to a corpse and devour it (Steam) |
| 3 | Hornet, Chanter, Stinger | Damage raised to 4 to 12 for all three in the beta |
| 4 | Scorpion, Volcanic, Spelaean | Beta: Volcanic is the support ("Adaptation" now affects all allies at half strength), Spelaean the fighter |
| 5 | Reaver, Menacing, Maniacal | Beta: Attack 22 for all; Menacing swaps "Rapid Assault" for "Swift Strike" |
| 6 | Waurms, Devourer, Pyroboros | "Corpse Eater" heals; Devourer's "Devour" kills below a threshold (30% in the beta); Pyroboros eats corpses for hero mana in the beta ("Mana Eater") |
| 7 | Hive Queen, Mother, Huntress | Bonus against Temple and Necropolis armies; Huntress's "Squash the Weak!" |
Sources: Patch #13 and the beta notes. In Patch #13 Unfrozen said Parasites had come to overlap the Locusts' role and Waurms "became overly dominant" while Scorpions were "among the least utilized", and moved power from the first two to the Scorpions. Unfrozen recommends no upgrade itself.
Turin's favorite Hive unit is the Reaver, which deals extra damage to higher-tier targets. He prefers the Maniacal Reaver, whose "Murderous Glee" gives it another turn after a kill, so with good morale it can attack three times; the Menacing Reaver is the steadier pick, with "Unholy Resilience" (it survives the first killing blow) and "Terror" (lower-tier enemies cannot attack it until the end of the round). In the Oct 15, 2026 beta the Menacing Reaver trades "Rapid Assault" for "Swift Strike" (beta notes).
At tier 7 Turin prefers the Hive Mother to the Hive Huntress: for one Focus, without ending her turn, she gives every friendly creature her "Soul Assimilator" bonus, which grows with each faction in the enemy army, while the Huntress quadruples her own. He calls the Mother's effect a force multiplier.
Laws to take
The Hive's laws, in Unfrozen's words, are "tailored for aggressive expansion": hire upgraded units directly from dwellings, gain huge bonuses in areas you do not control, and see far more about enemy heroes and towns (Devlog #14). Patch #9 moved laws so the Hive could "accumulate power faster in Single Hero mode": Focus Reserves to law tier 1, Natural Selection to 3, "Prosper and Flourish" to 4, while Hidden Desires rose to 2 and "Evolve, Adapt, Overcome" to 5.
Turin calls Focus Reserves "really, really, really good" for the Hive, because starting battles with Focus Charges lets you lay a cocoon on turn one; in his demonstration he first took Laws of the Hive, which lowers the requirements for higher law tiers, to reach it sooner. That detour is no longer needed: Patch #9 (Jun 2, 2026) moved Focus Reserves down to law tier 1.
Turin's favorite combination is for a battle mage: a law that gives Hive creatures +3 Attack and Defense, stacked with Great Conquest, which at its top level gives +6 in areas you do not control, for +9 to both when you take the fight to the enemy. Since Patch #13 Great Conquest affects only Hive creatures; the beta lets it affect all creatures again.
He calls the larva taunt "crazy good": with enough Focus you summon larvae, hatch them early, and adjacent enemies are provoked to attack them rather than your other units. Two things have changed since his video: Patch #11 cut Hive Offsprings I's explosion bonus from the 100% he read to 50%, and the beta limits the taunt to the first round after hatching.
The larva laws are Hive Offsprings I to III. Since Patch #11, I adds 50% explosion damage (down from 100%), II gives the larvae Taunt and III Double Attack; in the beta, II's taunt lasts only the first round after hatching. Mana Devour, Hive Magic and Great Conquest affect only Hive heroes and creatures since Patch #13, although the beta lets Great Conquest affect all creatures again. The beta also rewrites each Elite law: Elite Parasites +1/+2 max damage, Elite Hornets +2/+4 min damage, Elite Scorpions 1/2 rounds off ability cooldowns, Elite Waurmos +1/+2 Initiative, Elite Hive Queens +3/+6 Attack, Defense and Damage. See Faction Laws.
Heroes to pick
| Hero | What the notes say |
|---|---|
| Tavi | Larva specialist: more Fire Larvae based on Hive army health (4% + 2% per three levels since Patch #9); Magic hero since Patch #8, starts with Anti-Magic |
| Pauper | Might hero since Patch #8; starts with Battlecraft since Patch #9 |
| Maelstrom | Starts with Luck and 3 to 4 Reavers (Patch #11) |
| Mila | Spell specialist, buffed in Patch #8 |
| Goldentongue | Morale specialist, nerfed in Patch #8 |
| Niev | Physical damage specialist, nerfed in Patch #8 |
| Khariset | Starts with Fireball |
| Leira | Starts with Wean and Nightshade Magic |
| Nor, Zoran the Self-Founded, Lo, Oriax | Start with, in that order, Insight, Defense, Recruitment and Battle Magic since Patch #9 |
Sources: Patch #8, Patch #9, Patch #11. Patch #9 changed seven Hive heroes' starting skills so they "perform better as starter heroes", aimed at Single Hero mode. See Best Heroes.
Turin's favorite Hive hero is Curson, Duke of Rage, whose specialty adds damage to Heroic Strike and lowers the target's Initiative. With Combat leveled, Heroic Strike becomes free and refreshes after a kill, which he says "addresses like all the early game weaknesses" of the faction. His other recommendations were Pauper, Mila and the Tactics hero he calls the Duke of Battle. Pauper was a Magic hero with Battle Magic and Fireball in his video; Patch #8 made him a Might hero without Fireball and Patch #9 gave him Battlecraft. The Oct 15, 2026 beta cuts Curson's starting stat bonus from +3 to +2 (beta notes).
Skills and spells
The beta's new First Aid skill, open to every faction, is Unfrozen's answer to the Hive's losses: after a won battle, surviving stacks restore 20/30/40% of the creatures lost, and its subskills add 10% more (doubled with Recruitment), +2 health, a cleanse and a full heal on each kill (beta notes). On the live branch, the starting skills above show the mix Unfrozen expects: Battlecraft, Luck, Insight, Defense, Recruitment, Battle Magic and Nightshade Magic. On the beta the Pyroboros's "Mana Eater" feeds a Magic hero's mana from corpses; see Skills and Magic and Spells.
Turin's skill advice for a beginner follows from his hero pick: play Curson, raise Combat to expert and take Effortless Strike and Battle Thrill, so free Heroic Strikes finish weakened stacks before they hit back. With other Hive heroes, he says, he took losses whatever he did. His video predates the skills rework of Patch #8, so check the subskills against the game.
Late game
The late-game Hive used to rest on one huge larva stack: Patch #11 said Summon Swarm let it "create a massive extra unit that is extremely difficult to counter" and stopped other summons from counting (Patch #11). Since then the late game rests on the tier 6 and 7 creatures and the Elite laws. The Hive Queen line gains Attack and Defense against armies holding Temple or Necropolis creatures (20% in the beta, 25% before), so it is at its best against those two factions.
What changed in patches and the beta
- Patch #3 (May 3, 2026): Chitinous Ziggurat from 2,250 to 3,750 gold (Patch #3).
- Patch #9 (Jun 2, 2026): growth, damage, Corpse Eater (65 to 120 health), law tiers and starting skills buffed.
- Patch #11 (Jul 6, 2026): larvae reworked toward explosions; Waurms Attack and Defense +1.
- Patch #13 (Aug 20, 2026): Parasites and Waurms trimmed, Scorpions faster.
- Beta (Oct 15 and Oct 21, 2026): "Castes", the Scorpion split, First Aid, a shorter larva taunt, Corpse Eater down to 100; more Summon Swarm subskill changes on Oct 21 (Unfrozen). Not on the main branch; see Balance Update Beta.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play the Hive in Olden Era? Build an army made mostly of Hive creatures, use Summon Swarm's cocoons and larvae to block and absorb attacks, and expand fast with the Hive's laws. Unfrozen's notes say the hard part is keeping losses down in every fight.
Who is the best Hive hero in Olden Era? Unfrozen publishes no ranking; Tavi is the Hive's larva specialist, a Magic hero since Patch #8. Mila is its spell specialist and Niev its physical damage specialist.
What are the best Hive laws in Olden Era? Unfrozen does not rank them; the Hive's tree is built for aggressive expansion, with laws to hire upgraded units from dwellings and bonuses outside your territory. Hive Offsprings I to III power up the larvae.
Should I mix other units into a Hive army? Generally no: Unfrozen designed the Hive as a monofaction whose units grow stronger the more Hive unit types are present. The choice is yours, as Devlog #7 says.
Is the Hive good in Single Hero mode? It struggled there by Unfrozen's account in June 2026, which led to the Patch #9 buffs aimed at that mode.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden EraHeroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is Unfrozen's turn-based fantasy strategy game, the official prequel of the Heroes of Might and Magic series, in Steam Early Access on Windows since Apr 30, 2026, published by Hooded Horse with Ubisoft. It is set on the continent of Jadame with six factions; 1.0 has no announced date. -
HiveThe Hive is Olden Era's villain faction, a demon-worshipping cult of insects built as a "monofaction" that grows stronger the more Hive creature types it fields, with the faction skill Summon Swarm that hatches exploding Fire Larvae and a T7 Hive Queen. -
Beginner's GuideTo start Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, play the tutorial and Act 1 of the campaign, or a Classic or Single Hero skirmish on Easy against one AI; build in your town every day, keep one main hero fighting guards for experience and Law points while cheaper heroes collect resources, and learn the four hero stats, skills, Faction Laws and the four schools of magic. -
Faction LawsFaction Laws are Olden Era's technology tree for your starting faction. Fighting guards, capturing external dwellings and owning town halls earn Law points, every batch of points becomes a Seal, and Seals enact laws arranged in tiers that boost your economy, heroes and creatures. -
Best HeroesUnfrozen publishes no hero ranking for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era; a hero's strength comes from its specialty, class and starting skills, and the patch notes name the heroes it buffed and nerfed: spell specialists buffed on Jun 1, 2026, Tavi made a Magic hero and Pauper a Might hero, Lord Edgar weakened on Jun 1 and again with creature and experience specialists in the Oct 21, 2026 beta. -
SkillsA hero in Olden Era learns up to 8 skills, the faction skill included, and each skill has 5 subskills (pick 1 of 3 at Advanced and 1 of 2 at Expert). The right skills and subskills unlock one of two optional subclasses, and Early Access launched with 30 skills and 180 subskills.
